Route 17A in Portland was closed near the fairgrounds due to flooding on Monday and remained that way Tuesday morning.
The water freezing on the road has created a hazard for drivers and police said they would reassess the roads on Tuesday morning before commute time to see if they are safe to travel on.
The Connecticut River was expected to be near a flood stage of seven feet on Monday morning. Portland police closed 17A between Route 7 and Summer Street as a precaution, as the area is prone to flooding.
Reports of flooding came in from across Connecticut after a dramatic increase in temperatures last week caused melting and rain moved in, filling rivers to the brim. Ice jams along rivers also contributed to the flooding.
Flood warnings remain in effect for the Connecticut River in Hartford, Litchfield, Middlesex and New London counties.
Some residents in Kent had to be evacuated when the Housatonic River overflowed its banks Saturday.
There was also flooding along the Shetucket River in Norwich.
