Police Identify Pedestrian Killed in Route 8 Crash

Police have identifeid the pedestrian struck and killed on Route 8 in Waterbury on Friday evening as 19-year-old Peter Dieckhoff of Wolcott.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. Friday near exits 35 and 36 on Route 8 northbound, according to state police. The highway was shut down while authorities worked to clear the scene.

Police said Dieckhoff walked across the southbound lanes, crossed the median and walked into the far left lane on the northbound side, where he was struck. He was pronounced dead on scene.

Route 8 north was shut down after the crash. The highway closed again just hours later after two cars collided just hours later. One car rolled over, but injuries were minor, police said.

The driver of the car that struck Dieckhoff was not injured.
