Manhole Covers Costly for Simsbury Drivers

Drivers, beware if you plan on traveling on Route 10 in Simsbury. Several tires have blown out when drivers go over raised manhole covers.

“We’ve been here 20 years and I’ve never had this many tires exploding on one road construction ever,” Roger Fecteau, of Route 10 Tire in Granby, said.

The Route 10 resurfacing project, which is happening from the Drake Hill Road Intersection to the Granby town line, began on June 26 and is expected to continue for about six weeks.

Tammy Litwin ran over one of the manhole covers and blew out her tire.

“I was going really slow because there was a lot of traffic,” Litwin said. “I just couldn’t avoid it because there were cars on both sides.”

The town has received eight complaints from drivers, Simsbury First Selectman Mary Glassman said.

“The little rings around the manholes, half of them are off and it’s dangerous,” Mark Brady, of Simsbury, said. “They created a demolition derby situation.”

The police have also received complaints and angry drivers have been told to call the state. NBC Connecticut’s calls to the Department of Transportation have not yet been returned.
