SUV Slams Into East Haven Home

Driver may have had a medical emergency prior to the crash, fire officials said.

A driver lost control of his SUV and slammed into a home on Hemingway Avenue Monday.

Ronald Swanson lost control of his Ford Explorer at hit the house at 211 Hemingway Avenue around 12:15 p.m., according to police.

Swanson, 73, may have had a medical emergency before crashing, according to Deputy Fire Chief Anthony Moscato. A witness reported seeing the SUV swerving erratically just before it hit the house.

The force of the crash damaged the home's stone foundation and shifted the house two inches. Stone from the foundation fell into the basement, and a wall on the first floor cracked, according to Moscato.

A building inspector said the homeowners will be able to stay in the home. No one was in the house at the time of the accident.

Swanson was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
