Police ID Teen Pulled from Water on Suffield Line

Friends said the man was a star hockey player.

Rescue crews pulled the body of a missing swimmer from Congamond Lakes on the Suffield line on Tuesday morning.

A dive team was initially called to Middle Pond in the area of Chestnut Drive in Suffield around 4:30 p.m. on Monday after a 19-year-old Massachusetts man went underwater and never resurfaced. Police released the teen's name on Tuesday and said he is Kevin Major, of Westfield, Massachusetts

He had spent the day with friends on a pontoon boat and one of them called 911 for help from a nearby house.

Major was pulled from the water around 11 a.m. His friends said he was a star hockey player and a tremendous athlete.

"It's been a horrible, horrible summer out here for us," said Deborah Mattern. "People just aren't being careful out there."

This is the second drowning in the area in less than a month.

Larry Cauley, 22, of Suffield, drowned on June 19. His body was found 200 feet from shore.

"I think they should make life jackets just as mandatory as seat belts. They don't. Two in one month is a lot." Carol Fancy, of Suffield, said.
