Search Underway for 37-Year-Old Man at East Rock Mountain

A search is underway for an emotionally disturbed 37-year-old man at East Rock Mountain.

The man's mother told NBC Connecticut that her son, Manny, was driving to East Rock around 8 a.m. when he bolted from the car. She described him as sweet-natured and said she doesn't think he is a threat to himself or others.

Police were called at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when Manny's parents realized they were not going to find him.

Manny is described as a bald man who is 6 feet tall and weighs about 240 to 280 pounds. He was last seen wearing camouflage pants and a gray sweatshirt.

A helicopter searched the wooded areas for an hour and a half but did not find the man on Wednesday night. Police will remain on the pathways around the woods overnight until a daylight search can begin.

Police said it was too dark and dangerous for them on the ground due to downed trees, steep drops and loose rocks.

Police said they are concerned about cold temperatures and low visibility.

New Haven and Hamden police, in addition to the city's fire department, were at the scene.
