2 Airlifted to Hospital After Crash on Route 9 in Chester

Two people were airlifted from a crash on Route 9 in Chester Wednesday.

Connecticut State Police said the crash happened on Route 9 north near exit 6 around 12:40 p.m. Police said the crash happened when a BMW accelerated suddenly and rear-ended a Nissan traveling in front of it. The force of the crash caused the Nissan to swerve into a tractor-trailer traveling in the neighboring lane before veering off the highway and rolling into an embankment. The BMW also crashed off the highway into a gully.

The drivers of the BMW and Nissan were both airlifted to Hartford Hospital for treatment, but the extent of their injuries was not immediately clear. A passenger in the Nissan was also taken to Middlesex Hospital for suspected minor injuries. The occupants of the tractor-trailer were not hurt.

The crash closed the highway in the area, but it has since reopened.

The crash remains under investigation.
