Funeral Today for Hartford Officer Killed in Crash

A fund has been set up for Hartford police officer.

The funeral for an off-duty Hartford police officer killed last week in a crash in Hebron will be held on Wednesday.

State police said John Marvin, 28, lost control of his black Dodge Journey on Route 85, or Gilead Street, in Hebron around 12:30 a.m. on Friday, went up the embankment and landed about 50 feet in the grassy area.

Police think that Marvin thought he was at a four-way intersection. He was not wearing a seat belt, state police said.

Marvin graduated from the police academy in July 2009 and was with the Hartford Police Department since Dec. 14, 2009. He had been a member of the Connecticut National Army Guard since 2008.

"It is with a deep sense of sorrow that we mourn the loss of one of our family," Hartford Police Chief Brian Heavren said in a statement.  “Our condolences, sympathy and prayers are with Officer Marvin’s family during this time of grief.”

Marvin was in the Navy for six years and served one term overseas with Operation Iraqi Freedom. He won at least five prestigious awards.

He leaves his parents John W. Marvin, of Coventry, and Deborah (Hawkes) Marvin, of Bolton; his fiancée Scotti Easton; their son Jack Everett Marvin; and his brothers Jeffrey T. Marvin and his fiancée Meghann L. McInerney of Cambridge, Massachusetts and Officer James C. Marvin, with whom he served in both the military and Hartford Police.

His father is retired from the Manchester Police Department.

He is also survived by his paternal grandparents Willard and Louise Marvin of Manchester; his maternal grandparents, Harlene Fairbanks of Coventry and her husband David Fairbanks, and Clifford L. Hawkes Jr. and his wife Beverly of Houlton, Massachusetts; his uncles and aunts, Chris and Diane Marvin of Manchester, and Tom and Laurie Marvin of Coventry, and his aunt Linda H. Krob and her husband Allan "Skip" of Manchester.

He was predeceased by his great-grandparents Grayce and Harlan Wallbeoff.

Visiting hours were held on Tuesday at the John F Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center St., Manchester, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at South United Methodist Church, 1226 Main St., Manchester. Marvin will be buried at New Cemetery on Main Street in Coventry.

State police are investigating the crash.

Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra has ordered that all flags be lowered in honor of Marvin.
