Sex Offender Proposal Sparks Petition

A plan to build a new sex offender treatment facility in the center of Montville is causing concern among town leaders.

Town Council Chairwoman Donna Jacobson already has a petition out to oppose the state plan, The Day of New London reports.

The state Department of Correction selected The Connection Inc., a nonprofit human services agency, to open a 12facility at the Cochegan halfway house on the grounds of the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center.

Jacobson's petition argues that the location on Route 32, which is in the heart of the town's economic corridor and close to shopping centers and residential neighborhoods, is an unsuitable place to put sex offenders, The Day reports.

The Connection Inc. was the only bidder to create the facility, which would be of the prison, according to The Day

Jacobson, other lawmakers and residents are already collecting signatures and plan to hold a rally before submitting the petition to the governor, The Day reports.

Montville Mayor Joseph Jaskiewicz also opposes the plan and thinks the state should consider opening the treatment facility at the Webster Correctional Institution in Cheshire, which recently closed.

A spokesperson for the Department of Corrections told the Day ays negotiations with The Connection will include a strong emphasis on security for the facility.
