Lishan Wang, 44, was arrested after he was pulled over driving a red minivan Monday morning, the same minivan witnesses described leaving the scene of a shooting that left Dr. Vajinder Toor dead.
Branford resident Kalani Lopa told police he saw the red minivan the day before the shooting, early Sunday morning. Lopa said he was headed out to get milk, when he spotted the minivan cruising around and later parking in the Meadows condominium complex off Blueberry Lane.
'It was kind of weird for someone to be moving around here at 5:30 in the morning," Lopa said.
Lopa says he believes Lishan Wang, a Chinese national from Beijing, was planning his attack on Dr. Vajinder Toor.
About 24 hours later, around 8 a.m. Monday, when Dr. Toor was walking to his car on his way to work, police said Wang opened fire.
Richard Kalfaian lives in the condo complex and woke up to the gunfire.
"I heard gunshots or what appeared to be gunshots -- bang bang bang, bang bang bang," said Kalfaian.
Dr. Toor's pregnant wife and 3-year-old son were inside their home. Branford Police Lt. Geoffrey Morgan said Toor's wife told authorities she heard the shots and ran outside.
"When she exited the home, she was shot at," Lt.Morgan said. "She was not hit and was not injured."
Several neighbors called 911, describing the red minivan. An officer on his way to the scene spotted it and pulled the van over. Lishan Wang was behind the wheel and firearms were in plain view, according to the police.
"I think one of the main motives that they're looking at is a possible relationship between Dr. Toor and Mr. Wang at a previous place of employment," said Lt. Morgan.
Dr. Toor was in Connecticut working at Yale New Haven Hospital.
But several years ago he and Lishan Wang reportedly worked together at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. An employee there told the Associated Press the two had gotten into a heated argument.. with Wang ultimately threatening Dr. Toor.
"It's too early on in the investigation to know to what extent their interaction had been, but we do know it culminated here this morning at 8 a.m. with a very, very tragic outcome," Lt. Morgan said.
Wang's last known address is in Marietta, Georgia. He is being held on $2 million bond. He will be arraigned in New Haven Superior Court Tuesday morning.
