A pilot of a small plane carrying a banner is okay after crashing in the waters off Narragansett, Rhode Island, Monday afternoon.
The early investigation showed the pilot 26-year-old Jeremiah R. Coholan, of North Dartmouth, Massachusetts, lost power while flying over the open water on a small single engine 1953 L16 Bird Dog, Rhode Island State Police said.
According to police, the plane crashed into the water, but Cohoan got out before it sank.
Necn reporter Kathryn Sotnik was at the beach when she witnessed the crash at Bonnet Shores.
The U.S. Coast Guard says the pilot is okay after a good Samaritan with a boat rescued him.
Beachgoers were told to stay on the shore due to concerns about diesel in the water; however, the Coast Guard says pollution hasn't been reported, and the wreckage poses little hazard to navigation because it's under 20 feet of water.
The pilot, who was the only person on the aircraft at the time of the crash, was taken to Narragansett and declined medical treatment.
