Smoking Ban in Town With Tobacco History?

Smoking could be banned at all public facilities in South Windsor if some Town Council members have their way.

A new proposal would ban smoking at all town parks and athletic fields, according to the Hartford Courant.

But tobacco has been an important part of South Windsor for decades, and many aren't happy with the idea of banning it in all public areas.

"It is an arrogant affront, proposed, I believe by non arrogant people, which denies personal responsibility, satisfies someone else needs for feel good legislation and perpetuates the attitudesof do it if you can get away it," Nuway Tobacco Company President Tim Shepard told The Courant.

Anyone who violates the new proposed ordinance would face a $100 fine. The issue was first raised at a town hall meeting in March. There's no word on when the Town Council would vote on the proposed measure.
