Late Afternoon Forecast for February 7

    (Published Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018)

    What to Know

    • Snow has developed across much of Connecticut.

    • Snow will change to sleet and freezing rain in the afternoon inland.

    • Snow will change to ice and then quickly to rain at the shore.

Many schools across Connecticut are closed Wednesday and roads are slick across much of the state. The NBC Connecticut meteorologists have been forecasting a wintry mess today that includes snow, freezing rain, and plain rain.

Because of the storm, there are hundreds of school closings and there are issues on icy roads.

    SNOWFALL:

The highest snowfall totals will occur in the northwest corner, where up to or even six inches of snow will fall.

The least amount of snow will occur in southeastern Connecticut. This area of the state can expect a brief period of snow followed by a quick transition to rain.

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for much of Connecticut.

    IMPACT ON TRANSPORTATION:

The storm is also affecting air travel. More than a dozen flights scheduled to leave Bradley are canceled and several departures are delayed. Officials said around 35 percent of arriving and departing flights have been canceled. Passengers are advised to check with the airline before heading to the airport.

    CRASHES:

Route 305 in Windsor is closed in both directions between Mountain and Addison roads after a serious crash involving a garbage truck and a car. Drivers should seek alternate routes.

There have been several crashes, including one that closed Willis Street in Bristol between Northmont Road in Bristol and Beechers Lane in Wolcott.

A crash also closed part of Wintergreen Avenue in Hamden. Minor injuries were reported after a car hit a pole.

Route 8 North in Ansonia was closed after a tractor-trailer jackknifed. No injuries were reported.

    DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES:

Because of the storm, the state Department of Motor Vehicles has canceled road tests for Wednesday.

    FORECAST:

Take a look at our forecast for precipitation types. Snow will transition to ice throughout portions of northern Connecticut outlined in pink. A prolonged period of icing is possible as a light northern wind allows cold air to be trapped.
