Softball Coach Punched Ump: Cop

A couple was charged with breach of peace.

A youth softball coach from New Canaan is accused of punching a tournament official over a disputed call and he and his wife have been charged with breach of peace.

Terrance Dinan, 38, had just been ejected from Sunday's game at the Middlebrook School involving his daughter’s 10-and-under Ridgefield girls softball team when he hit Steve Kolitz, 53, of New Milford in the jaw, police told the News Times.

Kolitz, an umpire supervisor, said he was trying to diffuse the situation after Dinan and his wife, Andrea, 37, began cursing at an umpire who had made a controversial call at third base.

Andrea also held her middle finger up to the chief umpire, police said.

According to a police report, the Dinans told officers they did not know that Kolitz was an official because he was wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

The umpire did not report being injured, police said.

Both are scheduled to be arraigned in Norwalk Superior Court on Aug. 8.
