Son Kicks Home Invasion Suspect to Ground: Cops

A father and son wrestled a gun from the man trying to rob them, according to police.

A suspect in a home invasion in New Haven learned on Wednesday morning what happens when you mess with the dad of a martial arts expert.

You wind up with a mug shot like the one New Haven police released of DeAndre Bell, 22, of New Haven, on Thursday.

The call that police responded on Fairfield Street at 11:05 a.m. was for a home invasion in which the residents had apprehended the suspect.

That was an understatement.

Miguel Roman Sr. told police that he was leaving the house when Bell confronted him in a hallway, pointed a shotgun at him and ordered him back upstairs.

To get the attention of his son, "expert in martial arts," Roman spoke loudly, so he’d be heard.

That apparently worked.

The son, Miguel Roman Jr., came out of his bedroom, found Bell holding a shotgun to his father’s head and kicked Bell to the floor, police said.

But that was just the beginning.

Miguel Roman Sr. wrestled the shotgun from the Bell and the gun fired in the process but the bullet did not hit anyone.

The father and son subdued Bell and called police.

Bell told responding officers that he had gone to the house to rob Roman of marijuana, police said.

While the odor of marijuana permeated the air, police said, they did not find any.

Charges filed against Bell include criminal attempt to commit home invasion, carrying a dangerous weapon, unlawful discharge and criminal possession of a firearm.
