Sonic Plans Hit Snag in Wallingford

The plan to bring the first Sonic Drive-In to Connecticut may have hit a speed bump.

The developer with designs on building the fast-food restaurant in Wallingford, got some bad news from the town, the Meriden Record-Journal reported.

Robert Mesite wants to build the Sonic on the vacant lot where the Yankee Silversmith stood before it was destroyed by fire in 2007.

The commission wants Mesite to include a 50-foot grass setback from the beginning of the property line, before they approve his plans, the paper reported.  But Mesite says Sonic approved the site and is very particular about its requirements for franchisees to build.  He argues the lot is small, and that the 1800-square-foot restaurant is about the only thing that will fit.

"Sonic is very particular, they've approved that location...If we move it somewhere else on the property, Sonic might not approve it. They've already hinted that they might not," Mesite told the Record-Journal.

He wants the Planning & Zoning Commission to waive the landscaping requirements, but the commission has yet to make a decision on that.
