Special Session Without Donovan at the Helm

Chris Donovan will not preside over special session after a campaign aide was arrested.

The scandal surrounding Chris Donovan's Congressional campaign will be hanging over the special legislative session in Hartford on Tuesday.

Donovan, the speaker of the state House, will not preside over the session after his campaign finance director was arrested, charged in connection with a bill before lawmakers that would impose new state taxes on roll-your-own cigarette stores.

Donovan's new campaign manager, Tom Swan, said a week and a half ago that Donovan would not preside over the special session to avoid any appearance of impropriety.

"Let me say this unequivocally, no one bought my involvement my position or my influence on the Roll-Your-Own legislation or any other. I was not involved with that bill," Donovan said last week.

Other bills lawmakers will be considering include minimum staffing levels for state troopers and repealing a tax hike on diesel fuel.
