Stamford Police Ratchet Up Probe of Fatal Fire

Investigators want to know if there were smoke detectors and permits.

A Stamford police are getting more involved in helping fire officials investigate the Christmas morning fire that killed five family members, a Stamford police official said.

Police Capt. Richard Conklin said on Monday that unanswered questions remain, although authorities have determined the cause of the Dec. 25 house fire as embers in a bag of discarded fireplace ashes. For example, officials want to know if there were smoke alarms and whether the contractor doing renovation had permits.

Conklin said the fire can be used as a learning experience to help prevent similar tragedies. Officials have said it was the worst in Stamford in 25 years.

Madonna Badger, an advertising executive and the owner of the home, and Michael Borcina, a friend and contractor working on the house, escaped. Badger's parents and three children died.
