State Approves Jackson Labs

The bond commission approved $291 million to help construct facility.

The state has approved $291 million in funding for Jackson Laboratory.

The Maine-based company is planning to construct a massive bioscience facility on the UConn Health Center campus in Farmington.

By a vote of 8-2 down party lines, the State Bond Commission approved the public finances for the project.

The project is supposed to bring in 300 jobs.

Both Republican lawmakers on the pannel voted against the proposal.

"Our economic development investments ought to create a lot more jobs for a lot less money," Sen. Andrew Roraback. "Whether he likes it or not, it's $986,000 per job created.

Governor Malloy said the state needs to invest in order to be able to compete with neighboring states.

He pointed to when Pfizer left Connecticut and took 400 jobs to Massachusetts.

"If we do not invest," Malloy said. "Then we're going to lose the opportunities that we have."

The $291 million will be paid out over the next ten years.
