State Battles With Army and Wins

Connecticut officials went to battle with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and actually won.

The Corps has chosen an alternate site for a new training center in Middletown after its plan to build the new Armed Forces Reserve Center on Boardman Lane brought out some angry masses. State officials have said the site is environmentally sensitive..

The Army's has selected Cucia Park, which Gov. M. Jodi Rell said is the preferred site and the most sensible.

Middletown owns Cucia Park, a 40-acre site zoned for industrial use.

A new training center is needed because several existing facilities around the state are being closed under the 2005 recommendations of the Base Realignment and Closure Commission.

Army officials said the final site selection would not be made until an environmental assessment is completed.
