State Closing Enfield Prison

The Department of Correction plans to close the Enfield Correctional Institution by Oct. 1.

It is the latest in a series of announced closures of correctional facilities.

An official in the Gov. Dannel Malloy administration told the Associated Press about 350 inmates at the medium-security facility will be moved to an unused section of the Cheshire Correctional Institution. There are currently 723 inmates at the Enfield Correctional Institution. What would happen to the remainder of those inmates was not clear.

The closure is part of Malloy's planned budget cuts. The Department of Correction has already announced it is closing the Bergin Correctional Institution in Mansfield. The Gates Correctional Institute in Niantic closed in June.
