State College Tuition to Increase

State universities and community colleges will be affected.

The cost of a state college education will soon increase for students in Connecticut.

On Thursday, board members for the state's 16 public colleges approved increasing tuition almost 4 percent, starting next school year.

Southern, Southern, Eastern, Western and Central Connecticut State universities, as well as community colleges in the state, will be affected.

Under the new plan, commuter students will pay $315 dollars more a year and students who live on campus would pay more than double that.

Community college students will pay about $100 more.

The board said it is cognizant of the bad economy, but the tuition increases are necessary to pay for more faculty members and keep the schools competitive.

University of Connecticut earlier raised tuition and fees by 6 percent over the next four years.
