Prison Lockdown Lifted at All But 1 Unit

Inmates at Connecticut's maximum-security prison in Somers were been confined to their cells since three guards were assaulted in separate attacks on Friday, but the lock-down has been lifted for five of six prison units.

The attacks at the Northern Correctional Institute, which houses 450 inmates, including death row inmates, reportedly involved four inmates. One guard was treated at a hospital and released.

The lockdown continues at the unit where the most serious assault on a guard happened Friday, spokesman Brian Garnett said Monday.

State Rep. Karen Jarmoc, D-Enfield, says the General Assembly should consider mandatory minimum sentences for inmates convicted of assaulting guards.

A lock-down means inmates are confined to their cells and visitations are canceled.
