State Considers Electronic Tolls on I-95

Those traveling during rush hour between New Haven and Greenwich would be charged a toll.

The state Department of Transportation is looking into possible electronic tolling along the Interstate 95 corridor between New Haven and Greenwich.

Those traveling during rush hour, would be charged a toll and the DOT will use $1.4 million in federal money to research the idea.

Drivers would have the option of getting an electronic tag for their vehicles or be billed later and cameras would scan license plates to send drivers the bills.

The main goal of the proposal is to move traffic along Interstate 95 more efficiently and give drivers the opportunity to avoid any significant congestion and keep them from being stuck behind slow drivers.

Still, some motorist said they are not onboard.

"The state already is getting plenty of money from the gas tax and it’s just another tax on top of it,” Phil Pantoja, of East Haven, said.

Officials from the DOT said the fee amount is still up for debate.

Either way, motorist Mary Vineyard is against it.

"No, it’s just about money, we pay enough money,” said Vineyard.

But, Tim O'Shea sees the benefits.

"If it would save time, it would be a good idea, I would go along with that, definitely, yeah, an EZ-Pass type of thing,” said O’Shea.

The DOT stressed that they are only researching the proposal at this point.

The study is expected to take about 18 months.
