State Finds 1st West Nile Mosquitoes of Season

The pests are in Stratford

The state has its first round of West Nile virus for the season.

Some pesky mosquitoes trapped in Stratford on July 15 have tested positive, state officials said in a news release.

In 2008, eight Connecticut residents were infected with identified with the West Nile virus. Three were in Bridgeport, one was in Fairfield, one was in Sherman, two were in Stamford and one Greenwich resident was infected while traveling out of the state.

No one died of West Nile last season.

“This is the eleventh year that West Nile virus has been found in Connecticut. The recent announcement of WNV-positive mosquitoes in Stratford should be taken seriously,” J. Robert Galvin, commissioner of the state Department of Public Health, said. “Residents should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites during the mosquito season and eliminate standing water on their properties.”
