The funeral will be held today for State Representative Ezequiel Santiago. The 45-year-old Bridgeport resident died on March 15 after a heart attack, according to House Democrats.

The governor had directed that all state of Connecticut flags fly at half-staff until sunset on March 22.

Santiago served on the Bridgeport City Council before being elected to the state House of Representatives.

“We were terribly saddened to learn this morning of the sudden passing of Representative Ezequiel Santiago, a man who truly loved public service and his hometown of Bridgeport,” Gov. Ned Lamont said in a statement last week. “The State of Connecticut has lost an outstanding advocate, and our hearts are broken today as we mourn his loss. He was a devoted father, fighter for his community, and a dedicated public servant. Our prayers are with his family, friends, and constituents at this difficult time.”

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy said on Twitter that Santiago was a “great ally” and called him a “quiet, steady, dignified force for good.”

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal also released a statement calling Santiago’s death “is a painful loss.

“His tireless dedication and hard work made him an immensely accomplished public servant of even greater promise. He will be deeply missed for his great heart and boundless caring and compassion. I was proud to have him as a friend. My heart goes out to his family,” Blumenthal said in a statement.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Bridgeport Caribe Youth Leaders, in his memory. https://luzdepaz.com/tribute/details/2098/Ezequiel-Santiago/obituary.html
