State Looks to Boost Health Care Enrollment

Next week starts the national open enrollment period for individuals and families to sign up for health insurance plans on either the federally facilitated exchange or state-based exchanges.

Next week, individuals and families can begin signing up for health insurance plans on either the federally facilitated health insurance exchange or state-based exchanges like Access Health CT.

Officials with Access Health CT said that over the past year, they've learned how to best enroll residents in coverage through the state's health insurance marketplace.

Jason Madrak, Access Health's chief marketing officer, said the goal is to physically reach as many consumers as possible.

"We've expanded that store concept and actually have some additional locations across the state at public libraries and Department of Labor offices to make sure that we're expanding the concept of these stores where folks can come in and meet with people to sit down at terminals and actually enroll in coverage,” said Madrak.

According to state statistics, about 147,000 Connecticut residents, or 6 percent of the state population, remain uninsured, leaving Connecticut with one of the lowest uninsured rates in the country.

The state is working to enroll about half those people during the next open enrollment session.
