State Lost 4,100 Jobs in a Month

Most losses were temporary Census jobs.

For the second month in a row, thousands of Connecticut workers have lost their jobs.

The state lost 4,100 jobs in June after losing 5,500 jobs in May and the unemployment rate remains at 9.1 percent.

State Department of Labor leaders said the losses wiped out any gains made earlier in the year.

Most of the cuts were in government, while there have been job gains in the private sector.

“Most of these losses were in the government sector, though the state has a net gain of private sector jobs this year. However, private sector jobs are being created at a much slower pace than last year. We have added 1,800 since the beginning of 2011, as compared with a gain of 14,100 jobs for the same period last year,” Labor Statistics Supervisor Salvatore DiPillo said.

Employment in the government sector jumped in the Spring 2010 when several thousand people were hired for temporary federal Census jobs, but their work was mostly completed by Fall.

Employment in state government -- 68,400 -- is up 1,200 from June 2010, and 400 since the beginning of the year, while local government -- including tribal governments and their gaming
Establishments -- is down 2,500 over the year.
