Improvements Planned for I-84 in Southbury

The state is drawing up plans for a new traffic pattern near exit 16 in Southbury.

Congestion at exit 16, on Interstate 84 in Southbury is a problem.

On Tuesday, First Selectman Ed Edelson said that the state Department of Transportation is drawing up plans for a new traffic pattern near exit 16.

Though this is a step forward, Edelman admitted the project was long overdue.

"We have been failing left and right to make investments in infrastructure. My problem in Southbury is not unique. Overtime we've allowed infrastructure problems to fall more and more behind,” said Edelson.

Gani Metaj, who owns Patty's Pantry on Strongtown Road, said the road build up has been an issue for some time now.

"It affects the commuters, especially first thing in the morning at 7; this place can be deserted because nobody can get in," Metaj said.

Edelson said the plan might include more lanes coming off of the highway, improvements to the curvature of Old Waterbury road and the better coordination of traffic lights.

"If you're going south, you cannot get into my parking lot. You don't have a green light to turn," Mataj said.

Officials said the project could take about two years to complete.

Either way, Gani said he welcomes the future progress.

"I'm hoping that it will change, I'm hoping that it will be better for me, but you never know, hopefully,” Gani said.
