State Trooper Injured in Crash on I-691 in Cheshire

A State Police trooper suffered what are believed to be serious injuries in a crash on Interstate 691 West in Cheshire on Monday night while he was helping another driver.

State police said Trooper Jack Kulig, 36, had the lights of his cruiser on as he was helping a driver whose vehicle was disabled when another driver hit the back of his vehicle on the exit 3 off-ramp just before 5 p.m.

The impact of the crash spun the cruiser and Kulig sustained serious injuries, according to state police. Kulig was released from the hospital on Tuesday.

Police identified the driver who hit Kulig's cruiser as Steven Veras, 25, of Providence, Rhode Island. Charges are pending against Veras.

Veras and his passenger, Enrique Trinidad, 29, of Meriden, sustained what appeared to be minor injuries, police said.

Police are investigating.
