State Trooper Injured When Driver Hits Cruiser

A state trooper was injured in a crash in Middletown early Monday morning when his cruiser was rear-ended.

State police said the trooper was stopped to assist as a Department of Transportation crew fixed a guardrail damaged in a previous crash on Interstate 91 north, near exit 20.

The emergency lights were on and traffic cones were set up, warning about a lane closure, when the trooper was hit just before 1 a.m., according to state police.

The impact of the crash sent the cruiser across the highway and into a guardrail, police said.

The trooper and the other driver suffered minor injuries and both have been released from Hartford Hospital.

Police are investigating and remind drivers to adhere to the move over law.

Any driver approaching a stationary emergency vehicle on the shoulder, lane or breakdown lane must immediately reduce speed to a reasonable level below the posted speed limit and move over a lane from the emergency vehicle when safe to do so.
