State Workers Take Furlough Day

Many state offices closed down on Friday for an extended holiday weekend, a day sooner than in years past.

Friday was one of the three remaining mandatory furlough days for state employees this year.

The unpaid days off have been tacked on to holiday weekends and the state expects it will save about $10 million by closing the Department of Motor Vehicles, lottery offices and the Department of Public Health for the day.

There are a few exceptions to the furlough day.

State courts, parks, and emergency agencies remained open.

The Judicial Branch sent out reminders for those with court dates, that the court system was open for the day.

Courts will, however, be closed on Monday in observance of the Fourth of July.

There are two more unpaid furlough days for the remaining of the 2010 calendar year.

The day after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 26 and the Monday after Christmas, Dec. 27.
