Stew Leonard’s, first responders and several charities are working together to help thousands of families just in time for Thanksgiving.

On Thursday, dozens of community groups, and charities joined Newington firefighters and police officers to hand out hundreds of turkeys.

It’s a part of a community effort by Stew Leonard’s which will provide over 3,000 turkeys to food insecure people throughout the tristate area.

Barbara Coady says receiving a turkey from Stew Leonard’s will help her Thanksgiving a little bit easier.

“I’m just very blessed and truly thankful for the turkey’s,” said Coady. “My daughter and I are very appreciative of everyone who helped us.”

The grocery chain’s initiative to partner with local charities has a mission to provide turkeys for families in need.

Jamie DiStefano is the vice president of Stew Leonard’s Newington location and is always excited about giving back.

“It’s kind of our way of continuing our relationship with the local communities with our streets and our towns,” said DiStefano. “It’s nice to know that we’re able to give back and make sure that people have a meal.”

Volunteers from 25 different charities lined up in Newington to pick up the donations. Those donations are set to be dropped off ahead of Thanksgiving dinner preparations.

Joesph Johnson works with HARC, an organization providing support to those with special needs. Johnson has been stopping by to pick-up and drop off the donations.

“It gives me great pleasure to know what I’ve done,” said Johnson. “It’s a good look to know that you have people out there looking out for other people beside themselves.”

Firefighters and police officers worked together to place the turkeys in cars, some destined for local soup kitchens and homeless shelters.

More than 300 birds were handed out in Newington.
