Stolen Cow Caper Leads to Connecticut

At least 18 cows stolen from a farm in Rhode Island were found on a farm in North Stonington.

Police in Rhode Island have arrested someone in Connecticut in a rare case of cattle rustling.

At least 18 Holsteins went missing from High View Farm in Tiverton, Rhode Island last week.

The farm's owner, Arthur Smith, noticed the missing cows Thursday  and called police.

The cows were found at a farm in North Stonington belonging to Ledyard Lewis, according to police.  Lewis turned himself into authorities on Friday.

Lewis said he took the cows because Smith owed him money for feed, police said.

He is charged with felony larceny and theft of animals.  Lewis was arraigned and released on $10,000 bond.  He may also face federal charges because he transported the stolen animals across state lines, police said.

The cows have been quarantined on Lewis's farm until they can be tested by the Connecticut Department of Agriculture.  They will be returned to Smith once the test results are analyzed, police said.
