Storm Damage Closes Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratory at UConn

The Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratory at UConn will be closed until further notice because of storm damage.

A statement from UConn says high winds damaged a large 500-pound ventilation stack atop one of UConn’s buildings, pushing it onto the stack next to it, creating a danger that one or both could fall from the roof.

UConn police said no injuries have been reported. The metal stack is used to ventilate building exhaust from labs.

The building will be closed until further notice and repairs can be made once weather allows.

UConn officials said the building is structurally safe and poses no danger to those who have been inside, but it must be closed due to fire codes because the exits are blocked as part of the emergency response.

No class schedules are affected.

The Advanced Technology Laboratory, or ATL, remains open and usable, but the courtyard entrance is closed.

UConn officials said the buildings are known as the “big banana” and “little banana.”

They are just north of the Dairy Bar, which was not damaged.

Entrances around the ABL are blocked. The Dairy Bar will operate on its regular schedule.
