Stranger Saves Family From Norwich Fire

Good Samaritan helps wake family in time to escape.

A Norwich family awoke to their West Main Street home on fire early Thursday morning.

“The dog started barking. I didn't hear the dog, my wife did, but I heard somebody beeping the horn, driving up and down the road, and then finally stopped, stayed in front of the house beeping the horn, got my attention,” Todd Barber said.

It was the beeping that Barber said made him get up out of bed and run to the front of the house where he saw a glow coming from outside.

“My wife opened the door and this gentleman was telling us our house was on fire.  He was the one who actually woke me up anyway, and alerted us to what was going on,” Barber said.

The left corner of the driveway was on fire, and the flames quickly spread to the truck outside and to the house.  Todd and his wife scrambled to get their four children out of the house.  They all made it out safe, but one of their dogs wasn't so lucky.

Neighbors said they heard explosions.

“When I looked out the window, I seen the guy that lived there run over to the police. Next thing I knew, a cop came up my stairs and told me I had to get out.  I said, why, and he said the neighbor's house is on fire.  It was scary, very scary,” said a neighbor, who did not want to give her name.

Firefighters worked to put out the flames on both the house and the truck and were able to get everything under control, all thanks to a Good Samaritan who got the family out of the house first.

“The gentleman left.  We didn’t get a chance to thank him, nobody knows who he is, but I really would like to thank him,” said Barber.

The Barbers are also offering a $10,000 award for information about how the fire started.
