Weather Suspected in Structural Problems at Stratford School

Stratford High School students were dismissed early Thursday after the structural safety of the building's oldest wing was called into question, according to the mayor's office.

The mayor's chief of staff said teachers noticed some of the whiteboards were bowing slightly, and ceiling tiles appeared to have shifted in the upper wing.

He added that engineers believe dramatic temperature changes over the past 24 hours may have played a part.

It was enough to call into question the structural integrity of the building, and engineers were called in to inspect it, the mayor's office said.

The superintendent's office said students and staff were never in danger and Thursday's early dismissal was a precautionary measure.

"There is no threat to students or staff, but as always, we strive to put first and foremost the safety and well-being of our students and staff while the Engineers do the work they need to do," school officials posted on the public schools website Thursday morning

Town engineers have deemed the building safe and classes will resume Friday.

Continuing education classes scheduled for Thursday have been canceled and will resume Monday, according to the town.
