Student Injured Diving Into Makeshift Pool

A Trinity College student was critically injured while diving into a pool at a fraternity party, school officials said.

The student, whose name was not released, was taken to Hartford Hospital after the incident late Saturday at the Psi Upsilon house on campus.

The student dove into a 2-feet deep makeshift pool between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. Saturday, officials said. It had been dug into the ground for a tropical-themed party celebrating next weekend's homecoming celebration.

Trinity Dean Frederick Alford said counseling is being offered to students. The student's condition was not released Monday.

Privacy laws forbid university officials from identifying the student or releasing any information about his condition, but the president of the fraternity issued a statement.

Some students said the toughest lesson they learned is that life can change in the blink of an eye.

“One of our brothers was injured. The extent of his injuries are unknown. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family,” said Josh Biren, president of Psi Upsilon.

Whether or not they knew the victim personally, students say there is a general sense of sadness across campus.

“I think everyone feels bad about what happened and feels bad for the kid it happened to,” said Katy Pluck, a Trinity student.
