On Saturday, Connecticut students took part in the inaugural FIRST LEGO League Competition for grades 4 through 8.
The event is hosted by South Windsor High School’s FIRST robotics team 177.
FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology – and the goal, according to FIRSTInspires.org, is to inspire young people in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math – STEM.
Teams were tasked with creating their own LEGO robots to solve issues with cities and towns.
Teams were judged on several things, including robot design.
The goal is to allow students in grades 4 through 8 to experience the solving of real-world problems by applying stem core principles.
“I think it’s great that we’re inspiring the next generation,” said Sivani Arvapall, a student organizer who is a part of the South Windsor High School’s FIRST Robotics team 177. “We went through this same experience two years ago and we enjoyed it so much and we wanted to give it back.”

Aarav Nair, who is a part of South Windsor High School’s FIRST Robotics team 177, also worked to organize the event.
“My favorite part when we competed was watching the robot games,” said Nair. “I’m super excited to see the robots matches and see what the teams came up with.”
The four teams that won received a golden ticket and will move on to compete in the state FIRST LEGO LEAGUE.
