Sunday Budget Session A Bust

Governor Rell and Democrats can't reach an agreement

Even after Governor Jodi Rell called top legislators to the Gov's residence over the weekend, Connecticut is still without a budget for next year -- which begins on July 1.

Rell and the legislative leaders met Sunday for for about three hours but failed to come up with a solution to the state's fiscal woes.

Rell has promised to veto a Democratic budget passed late last week and this is the first time the two sides have sat down since June 3, reports CT News Junkie.

At issue is how to cover a hefty deficit that could surpass $8.8 billion for the next two fiscal years.

More budget talks are set for Monday. Officials are under a tight deadline considering this current fiscal year ends Tuesday.

In the event an agreement isn't reached by then, the governor with have to sign executive orders to pay the state's bills starting Wednesday.
