Suspicious Device Leads to Evacuations

Several buildings along Church Street in Naugatuck were evacuated on Wednesday afternoon after a suspicious device was discovered.

The State Police bomb squad was called to 72 Church St., where the device was spotted inside an empty liquor store.

Officials who were at the scene on Wednesday said the object was a military artillery shell. The device was removed, but it was unclear if it was dangerous or not.

Church Street was closed between Rubber Avenue and Park Place during the investigation.  Those roads reopened just before 6 p.m.
