Swine Flu Takes Fifth Connecticut Victim

A fifth Connecticut resident has died due to the swine flu, according to the Department of Public Health.

This person is a Hartford County resident in their 50's with underlying medical conditions.  They passed away after a recent hospitalization.

On June 3, a Waterbury woman with underlying health issues died after contracting swine flu.

On June 11, a kindergarten-aged boy from Waterbury became the second person in Connecticut to die from the illness.

On June 15, a Waterbury woman in her 40s died after contracting swine flu. She had been treated at Waterbury Hospital for a respiratory ailment before being diagnosed.

On June 18, a Hartford adult in their 40s died of swine flu and had underlying health issues.

So far, 824 state residents have confirmed cases.  Of those, 36 have been hospitalized.

The commissioner of the Department of Public Health, Dr. J. Robert Galvin, said that most cases have been mild, but for some with weak immune systems or underlying medical conditions, it can be quite dangerous.

The health department released figures of known cases in the following counties:  Fairfield (399), Hartford (115), Litchfield (14), Middlesex (6), New Haven (248), New London (9), Tolland (25), and Windham (4).
