Team Tate Hits the Links

Life is pretty good these days for Shelton High School senior James Tate. Not only did he create a national stir by using the school wall to ask out his prom date, but it turns out he's a pretty good golfer to boot.

Tate led Shelton to the Southern Connecticut Conference golf championship on Tuesday. Tate shot the low round of 76 at the Race Brook Country Club to propel his team past Amity, Notre Dame and Fairfield Prep.

Tate gained national attention when he asked Sonali Rodrigues to the prom by posting a message in giant cardboard letters last month.

The stunt, viewed by most as a romantic gesture, earned Tate and two friends a one-day suspension and a ban from the prom.  After a massive social media campaign and pressure from local lawmakers, the school changed its tune and reversed the ban.

Shelton's Prom is Saturday.
