New Haven Snow Cleanup Continues

The City of New Haven continues to remove snow and has brought in outside contractors to help clear the major and secondary streets.

Many streets in the city have remained snow-covered from last week’s storm.

Front loaders lifted snow into dump trucks over the weekend and into Monday.

In anticipation of another mid-week storm, the city has implemented a 72-hour rule, which means that if any car is parked in the same spot for more than 72 hours, the city will likely tow the vehicle.

While some have voiced concerns that the city has been slow to respond to the storms, Mayor John DeStefano defended the cleanup procedures.

"If it was the first storm of the year and it was 15 inches, that would be no problem. We've never moved that volume of snow, never had to move that volume of snow," he said.

The huge snow banks are making conditions hazardous for children as well.

New Haven Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Reginald Mayo said schools are open on Monday, Jan. 31, but he’s offering tips to parents to make sure students are safe:

  • If possible, please accompany your child to the bus stop
  • Remind children not to climb on snowbanks and to remain off the road at all times.
  • Remind children to use extreme caution when crossing streets and driveways as snowbanks can cause limited visibility for drivers.
