Thieves Steal Wire from School Sports Field

The theft caused $20,000 in damage.

Hundreds of feet of underground cable were stripped from poles that lit East Hampton Middle School’s sports fields over the past week and police are investigating.

Frank Grzb maintains the facilities and told East Hampton police that the cost to repair the damage and replace the wire is around $20,000.

The wire appears to be copper, NBC Connecticut crews at the scene said.

There have been several copper thefts around the state as prices for the metal have jumped. Copper prices are trading at $9,600 a ton,according to CNBC.

East Hampton police are asking anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area of the middle school over the past week to report it by calling 860-267-9922.
