This Candidate Could Knock You Out

"Tremendous” Travis Simms is turning from the boxing ring to politics

Candidates often say campaigns feel like boxing matches, but a Common Council candidate in Norwalk really knows what a boxing match feels like. He’s actually been in them.

The town’s Democratic committee endorsed Travis Simms, a 37-year-old former boxing champion, to fill the seat held by Common Council President Phyllis Bolden.

Simms, known in the boxing world as “Tremendous” Travis Simms,  was the WBA super welterweight champion before losing the title in a fight in Bridgeport July 2007. He had a 25-1 record.

Don’t worry about whether Bolden can hold her own against a boxer. She says she won't be running for a fifth term. And Simms likes her so much he said he considers her a mentor.

Simms is already eyeing a bigger ring. He said he would like to run for mayor someday.
