Substation Issue Knocks Out Power to Thousands in Bridgeport, Stratford

Thousands of people were left without power in Stratford and Bridgeport Saturday night after an issue caused problems with two United Illuminating substations.

UI officials confirmed that at the height of the outage, 30,000 customers were without power.

Witnesses told NBC Connecticut they lost power sometime between 9:30 and 10 p.m. Saturday. At one 24-hour gas station, an employee sat in his car in the parking lot all night waiting for the lights to go back on.

The issue at one substation was resolved Saturday night, but it wasn't until just before 6 a.m. Sunday that power was fully restored in the area.

UI is still working to determine the cause of the outage. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
