Three Rescued After Pleasure Boat Capsized

Boaters clung to capsized boat for three hours during search

Three people from City Island, New York were rescued from the water a mile south of Silver Sands Beach in Milford three hours after their pleasure boat capsized on Thursday night.

Coast Guard officials said the operator of the boat called 911 just before 9:30 p.m. to say his 19-foot boat was taking on water.

The Coast Guard immediately launched a rescue boat and search helicopter. Fire boats from Milford, Stratford and Bridgeport also joined in the search.

The three people were wearing life jackets and hung onto the capsized boat until they were spotted by the Coast Guard helicopter around 12:30 a.m.

They were taken by boat to shore in Stratford and  treated on the scene for minor exposure injuries.

The accident is under investigation.
