He helped save the life of a domestic violence victim and a fellow officer, and for that he's being honored as a top cop.
Stamford Police Officer Wayne James is getting an honorable mention from the awards program Top Cops. Awardees are nominated by their fellow officers for outstanding service during the preceding calendar year. He was the only person named from Connecticut.
James was honored for saving a woman and a fellow officer when he shot a knife-wielding 16-year-old city high school student on Jan. 15, 2008, the Stamford Advocate reports. The teen was allegedly was holding a kitchen knife high over his head and struggling with Lt. Nicholas Montagnese, the newspaper reports.
James said "keeping Stamford safe is one of the most important things we can do to make it a great place to live and raise a family."
He is one of 68 police officers honored from across the nation.
The National Association of Police Officers (NAPO) facilitates the program. NAPO is a coalition of law enforcement unions and associations from across the United States.
