He helped save the life of a domestic violence victim and a fellow officer, and for that he's being honored as a top cop.

James was honored for saving a woman and a fellow officer when he shot a knife-wielding 16-year-old city high school student on Jan. 15, 2008, the Stamford Advocate reports. James said "keeping Stamford safe is one of the most important things we can do to make it a great place to live and raise a family."

He is one of 68 police officers honored from across the nation.

The National Association of Police Officers (NAPO) facilitates the program. NAPO is a coalition of law enforcement unions and associations from across the United States.
