Torrington Police Warn of Dangerous Phone Scam

Torrington police are warning residents of a phone scammer who attempts to gain remote access to the victims’ computers and steal their personal information.

Police said the scammer has called anonymously from the number 646-612-3456 and claims to be from the “worldwide web” or another internet-based company. The scammer has been known to tell the victim there’s a problem with his or her computer and offers to help the victim troubleshoot the issue.

This would allow the scammer to gain access to victims’ computers and retrieve their personal information, police said.

Police said residents should refrain from allowing anonymous callers to access their computers, and to call their internet service providers directly for help with any problems or concerns.

Anyone with questions or information is asked to contact Torrington police Sgt. Vinny Calabrese at 860-489-2058.
